Photos: Congressman Guest Joins Committee on Homeland Security on Trip to Border

February 27, 2023

Washington, D.C. – On Friday, Congressman Michael Guest visited with law enforcement agents in El Paso to discuss the troubling state of the border crisis.

“My conversations with our border patrol agents gave a clear picture of the dysfunctional state the border has reached under this Administration’s inaction,” Congressman Guest said. “These officers are overwhelmed, and it’s apparent that the first step that needs to be made is for this Administration to reinstate the policies they removed early into President Biden’s term. I’m working with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to introduce legislation that would help secure our border, but we need the Biden Administration to join this mission and enforce the laws that are already on the books.”

Background:

Chairman of the Committee on Homeland Security Mark E. Green, MD (R-TN), led the Committee Members on their visit to El Paso, where they witnessed strategies to deter drug smuggling, human trafficking, and other impacts of the worst border crisis in American history.

The trip took place as the number of illegal immigrant encounters reached over 1 million in Fiscal Year 2023, a figure 20 percent higher than the same time frame measured in 2022.

January marked the 23rd consecutive month that border law enforcement agents encountered 150,000 or more illegal immigrants and the 7th consecutive month that law enforcement seized over 1,400 pounds of fentanyl.

Congressman Michael Guest represents Mississippi's Third Congressional District. Currently serving his third term, Congressman Guest serves as the Chairman of the Committee on Ethics. He is also a member of the Committee on Appropriations and the Committee on Homeland Security.
