Washington, D.C. – Today on the House floor, Congressman Michael Guest (MS-03) honored the Mississippi officers who gave their lives in the line of duty over the last year. This recognition comes during National Police Week, an annual event where police officers and families of fallen officers visit Washington, D.C. to honor law enforcement officers who lost their lives during the previous year.
Congressman Guest recognized the five officers Mississippi has lost over the last year: Police Officer Emmett Paul Morris with the Raleigh Police Department who passed away on May 17, 2018, in a vehicle crash; Corporal Walter Zachery Moak with the Brookhaven Police Department who passed away on September 29, 2018, from gunfire; Patrolman James Kevin White with the Brookhaven Police Department who passed away on September 29, 2018, from gunfire; Patrol Officer LeAnn Simpson with the Philadelphia Police Department who passed away on November 24, 2018, in a vehicle crash; and Police Officer Robert McKeithen with the Biloxi Police Department who passed away on May 5, 2019, from gunfire.
"May we remember these brave officers, their sacrifice to protecting our communities, and the sacrifice they made for the people who call Mississippi home," Guest said on the floor.
Congressman Guest and Senator Hyde-Smith introduced companion bills, S. 1182 and H.R. 2246, earlier this year that would rename a Brookhaven post office after Corporal Walter Zachery Moak and Patrolman James Kevin White, who were recognized on the floor today. The proposed new title of the post office also honors Deputy Donald William Durr, who passed away in 2017.
