GOP Rep: President Trump Is Keeping His Border Security Promises | Opinion
Since his inauguration on January 20, President Donald Trump has worked tirelessly to restore border security and enforce our nation's laws. He has kept his promises to the American people to secure the border.
The president wasted no time in reversing the disastrous Biden-Harris administration policies that brought criminal illegal aliens into communities across our nation. The actions taken by President Trump to secure our border and make America safe again have been nothing less than historic, and have already reduced illegal border crossings by over 60 percent in his first week in office alone.
On day one, President Trump declared a national emergency at the Southwest Border and immediately set out to end the failed "catch and release" policies of the Biden-Harris administration. The president rightly resumed work on the border wall and brought back the successful "Remain in Mexico" policy, which had been rescinded by President Joe Biden in the early days of his term.
But President Trump's promise-keeping did not stop there. He continued to focus on taking back control of our Southwest Border from criminal cartels and stopping the massive influx of migrants. One of his most effective moves in stemming the flow was to shut down the widely abused CBP One app. Under President Biden, this app aided the processing and releasing of nearly one million immigrants into the country.
Additionally, President Trump ended the Biden administration's mass parole program for Cubans, Haitians, Nicaraguans, and Venezuelans—a disastrous initiative that had provided entry into the United States for 30,000 individuals every month.
President Trump's strong border policies have put every single illegal alien in the United States on notice. Deportation flights are happening every day; and in just two weeks since Trump was sworn in, almost 10,000 illegal aliens have been arrested and are headed back to their country of origin. Among these are criminals with horrible records, including those charged with child molestation, sexual assault, drug trafficking, and assault with a deadly weapon.
In addition to these border security and immigration enforcement measures, President Trump has demonstrated his commitment to keeping us safe by working with Congress to protect Americans from violent criminal illegal aliens who never should have been released into our country.
The first bill that the 119th Congress passed into law was the Laken Riley Act. The bill was named for Laken Riley, a 22-year-old nursing student in Georgia who was brutally murdered by an illegal alien who had previously been released after crossing the Southwest Border and later released from custody on theft charges. The act holds illegal immigrants accountable when they commit theft, burglary, or crimes that cause serious bodily injury. This common-sense measure was proudly signed by President Trump and requires that these criminal aliens be detained to protect the American public.
As the chairman of the House Committee on Homeland Security Subcommittee on Border Security and Enforcement, I am honored to work alongside the president to secure our border. Securing the border and protecting Americans is our top priority. The Republican-led Congress will be working with President Trump to pass legislation that makes our borders secure and our country safe.
The American people elected President Trump on the promise that he would secure our borders and make America safe again. He has most assuredly kept that promise. Promises made. Promises kept.
